Imported flushable portable mobile toilets look and operate differently from the water closet (WC) toilet systems traditionally used at home and in offices. A lot of workers, employees, and others who need the use of these imported mobile units in construction, mining, and other remote locations are yet to warm up to these systems. Coupled with this are reported discomfort from extreme heat resulting from no-to-low ventilation and odor arising from the fecal matter contained within the same unit.

To create local solutions to solve local problems, creative indigenous research institutions and manufacturing companies, using feedback from users, have developed customized portable mobile toilets that are more suitable to local conditions, not just in Ghana but in other tropical countries in Africa, Asia, etc. Current systems, thus manufactured, although not yet very mobile, are making great inroads and tend to be more acceptable to workers than most of the imported units around. The use of biodigesters to treat waste in an environmentally friendly manner is an added advantage of these systems.

While we continue to deploy imported portable mobile toilet systems, we have also taken key steps in promoting the use of indigenous systems. We have partnered with key public institutions (in a PPP arrangement) and some other manufacturers to encourage the use of locally assembled mobile toilets within local companies for industrial applications.
