Is South Africa good for a honeymoon?

After the undoubtedly tedious processes of wedding planning and marriage traditions and rituals, couples move out to serene surroundings to embark on their journey into marital bliss.

The first step in planning a honeymoon is choosing the perfect destination. A South African honeymoon is the perfect escape for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure lovers. In our previous article, we shared 20 unique honeymoon places in South Africa. Reading this will give you different options to choose from for your post-wedding holiday.

The iconic Cape Town, with its Table Mountain backdrop and vibrant city life, sets the stage for urban romance. Kruger National Park beckons honeymooners with thrilling safaris and the opportunity to witness the Big Five (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, buffalo, and zebras) as well as cheetahs and hippos in their natural habitats.

The picturesque Garden Route, with its coastal charm, and the Drakensberg Mountains, offering serene landscapes, provide diverse options for a romantic retreat. The diverse landscape includes coastlines, mountains, grasslands, and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Winelands are a prime location for an authentic African wine-tasting experience.

South Africa is beautiful, but it’s a long way from home. Expect to dedicate about two days to travel to the country (getting there and back). Couples with less time to lose will want to consider other honeymoon destinations. It’s also a country made for exploration. Honeymooners who want to sit back and relax might have more fun at an all-inclusive resort in another destination.

Is South Africa a safe honeymoon destination?

There is no such thing as the safest place in the world. At least several recorded crimes go on, but probably not much is captured and shared on the internet, hence the thought of these nations being considered safe.

For South Africa, many areas are safe, but the US government warns that crime and civil unrest are common in the country. Travelers and even locals are therefore urged to exercise caution, be vigilant of their surroundings, and set boundaries. Ensure you’re always with someone you trust.

Is Cape Town safe? Yes, if you are smart and keep your wits about you. Although there are a lot of people who have felt unsafe in Cape Town, it is right to note that it is in Africa, and you need to exercise caution as a traveler. Cape Town sees more petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag snatching.

For travelers or foreigners, it is recommended you take Uber or book private transport from the airport to your hotel or Airbnb. Avoid visiting townships unless it’s with a reliable tour operator, and always lock your car, put things in a safe in your hotel room, and leave your flashy jewelry at home. It’s also best to avoid deserted beaches and roadways at night.

Is Johannesburg safe? No. Johannesburg has extremely high rates of crime. Though many safaris will fly through Johannesburg, you are going to want to spend the bulk of your time in Cape Town over Johannesburg. And avoid flying through Joburg if you can. If you do have a layover there, be extremely vigilant if you are flying through Johannesburg. and I do not recommend staying overnight here.

The Best Time to Honeymoon in South Africa

“What’s the best time to have your honeymoon in South Africa?” is one of the best questions for any prospective honeymooners with such a destination in mind. This is because it is right to know the weather and even the atmospheric conditions of the place before one thinks of going on such trips.

The good news is that South Africa is a pleasant destination across all four seasons, but it’s also a large country with regional climates; hence, some months have more upside than others, depending on what you are looking for.

The best time to visit will depend on what tops your honeymoon itinerary. If spotting a big game on a safari honeymoon is important to you, opt for May through September as it’s cooler, drier, and less rainy.

Keep in mind that colder months may offer more special offers, and the hot months of December to February are more crowded in Kruger Park, and the animals are tougher to spot due to dense vegetation from the rains and hot temperatures, making them less active during the day.

The best time to view games in Kruger Park is from late July to the end of October, as the temperatures are cooler, meaning more activity, and the park is coming out of the dry season, which means the vegetation is less dense.

Newlyweds most looking forward to exploring Cape Town will want to book their trips for the summer months (November to February in South Africa), where they’ll take in glorious sunsets.

What to Pack for a South African Honeymoon

You’ll likely be spending a decent amount of time outdoors during your trip to South Africa. Sunblock and insect repellent will help you withstand the elements. Comfortable closed-toed shoes will keep feet safe and dry during adventures, and lightweight clothes in neutral tones will prevent you from getting too hot. Bring binoculars to get a better view of the wildlife. Evenings can get cool, so pack a fleece. Trendy, seasonal outfits will serve you well during wine tastings and upscale dinners.

You’ll also want to speak with your doctor before traveling about necessary shots and precautionary measures. Though malaria is rare, it does exist in South Africa. A healthcare professional may recommend bringing anti-malarial drugs.
